Tips to Have a Healthy Smile During Halloween

Halloween is a good time to remind yourself and your children about the importance of taking care of your teeth. You only get one set of teeth in life so take care of them! We understand that it is also almost impossible to avoid candy on Halloween considering that there are stockpiles of delicious chocolate everywhere you look. However, moderation is key, and it’s okay to indulge every so often. Yes, we said it! It’s OK to have candy, BUT we encourage you to follow these tips to help keep cavities and tooth decay far, far away:

  1. There is such a thing as “good” candy: Not all candy is entirely bad for your teeth. There are better choices to choose from like dark chocolate and sugar-free candy. If these are not available, choose chocolates that melt quickly. This means that they will have less contact with your teeth which is less of a risk for cavities.
  2. Drink water after eating your sweets: If you have access to a bathroom and a toothbrush, this would be best. However, we know that many of you will be out and about so if this is the case, have a glass of water to help wash away any candy remains.
  3. Try fun alternatives to candy: Pretzels, string cheese, and boxed raisins are better choices against candy and are healthier, too!

Keep your trick-or-treaters oral health in mind by joining in giving out fun candy alternatives like small toys, bubbles, stickers, pencils and more!
